I'm not sure if it comes through here real well, but there are tiny 'flags' of metallic foil and wires tied above the field here. I assume it's to keep birds away, but I'm not sure. I found it interesting, and I thought it was an interesting twist to what would otherwise be a fairly simple rural/agrarian photo. The odd thing is that this seems to be almost wetlands, and it's located right next to a rest-stop off of the New Jersey turnpike.

I took a few of these, and they're all pretty much the same, but different. I liked the balance of this one.

I missed a great shot that day, however, and this is all I have to show for it. I was crossing the Benjamin Franklin bridge from New Jersey into Philadelphia, and the sky was a heavy, dark lid covering over a shining golden sunset in the distance. The light was passing through the windows of buildings, and it was a really intriguing mix of light and dark that was ominous and glorious at the same time. I knew I only had a few moments to catch it so I got right off at 6th Street, parked my car, and ran to the bridge - only to find that the south side of the bridge was closed due to painting. Ugggh. I ran back across and about a third of the way across the north side of the bridge as fast as I could. Unfortunately there were drapes put up to contain the paint and I couldn't see any of the buildings I'd seen while driving. The light had faded too, so I'm not sure if it would have worked anyway. But I tried. I'll keep an eye out and perhaps it will happen again one day.

As usual I've used the reflection of the street to give it more depth. And I think it works. Without the church-like arches I'm not sure it would have quite the same effect.

When people ask me what I do photographically, I tell them that I do street photography, which usually confuses them. I'm all about the found image. I don't do set-ups, and I certainly don't do poses - not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's just not for me (at least right now). I identify more with Weegee. Or perhaps Robert Frank. But I also do a lot of architectural imagery. Most of that never gets posted, but every now and then I get some good ones. The recent one from Chinatown in Philly was good. It's kind of like a fortress tucked in behind a moat of parking lots. And this one from Manhattan is good too. I like the way the water towers balance with the spires of the cathedral.

The magic of Disney juxtaposed by the reality of street life.

This is probably my favorite pic from my recent trip to NY. The cab reflected in the center, and the lights, and the Disney poster seem to collectively say downtown. It doesn't look like uptown to me. It's more glitzy. And then there's the grafitti. I can't exactly read it all, but it certainly gives an allusion to what urban life is like. And that 'scrawl' works with the font of the Disney logo - similar in a way, but worlds apart. But I guess what I really like about it is that it's real. It's just a quick snapshot of something found on the street but the graffiti brings in a suggested narrative. And that narrative is really what's compelling. "They tried 2 kill me". It's almost jungle-like - predator and prey - but in the city. If I'd set this up it would be viewed as to cliche, and fake. But here it is. Of course, whomever wrote it could have been making it up. Or, for all I know, it might just be a quote from a gangsta rap song. Hmmmm. I guess that still wouldn't matter because the power of the Disney thing is so strong.

I thought this was interesting. The distortion almost gives a skull-like appearance to the figure.

I find it interesting the way photos will occasionally connect, and I think that this one and the one above it work quite well. It's more connected than the three that I did in Chinatown below.
